Bethesda Open-Span Porch: Clean Lines & High-Performance Materials
Diamond Decks constructs screened porch ceilings to maximize vertical volume. For the Bethesda project, the design centered on a custom beam that eliminated the need for traditional cross-ties. Eliminating cross ties keeps the overhead space entirely clear, allowing the tongue-and-groove cedar ceiling to read as a single, continuous surface.
Material Selection: Deep Tones & Organic Textures
The aesthetic relies on a contrast between high-performance composites and the warmth of natural timber:
- Fiberon IPE Decking: A dark composite that carries the visual weight of hardwood without the maintenance demands of exotic wood.
- Tudor Brown Border: A darker-shade perimeter border creates a crisp, framed edge.
- T&G Cedar Ceiling: Natural grain variation provides a premium feel and serves as the textural focal point.
- White Vinyl Railings: A clean perimeter that provides a bright contrast, allowing the rich colors of the IPE and cedar to dominate the palette.
Lighting & Atmosphere
A cedar ceiling is a luxury finish, but the atmosphere depends on light. Three distinct sources work together:
- Integrated Skylights: Large openings keep the porch bright during the day and prevent the roof from darkening the home’s interior rooms.
- Recessed Lighting: Integrated fixtures provide a warm glow after sunset.
- Natural Reflectivity: The amber tones of the cedar catch light, creating a depth that synthetic materials cannot replicate.
High-Performance Screening
To keep views sharp, the build incorporates professional-grade components:
- Screen EZE System: Provides a clean, finished frame around every panel for a modern look.
- TUFF Screen HD: A heavy-duty mesh with superior tear resistance compared to standard fiberglass, designed to withstand wind and wear.
Solving the Basement Span
Building over a basement entrance added a layer of complexity. The main beam spans the wide opening without relying on cross ties, which would have cluttered the overhead view.
The Result: A sound structure that keeps the ceiling wide open, unobstructed, and finished in flowing cedar.
